This summer, Elafonisos Eco proudly hosted 50 Scouts from across France and Belgium, dedicating their time and effort to preserving the natural beauty of our beloved island. From July 18 to August 22, these passionate young individuals contributed a staggering 500 days of work to ensure the cleanliness and sustainability of Elafonisos.

Leadership Rooted in Connection
Alexandra Papoulias, the volunteer leader of the Scouts, brought a deep personal connection to the island. As the granddaughter of a native of Elafonisos, Alexandra grew up visiting the island every summer, she has cherished the island for over 20 years. Reflecting on her connection, Alexandra shared that she grew up playing on Elafonisos’ beaches and streets, nurtured by a vibrant and caring community. Leading this initiative was her way of giving back to the island that has given her so many beautiful memories.

Keeping Elafonisos Clean
The Scouts focused on cleaning key areas of the island, including:
- The Village
- Ferry Arrival Point
- Simos Beach
- Panagia Beach
- Pavlopetri
- Pounta
- Kontogoni Beach
- Agio Patapio
Their work extended to a special collaboration with the Dune Festival, where they conducted cleanups every morning after nightly shows for seven of the eight festival days.

Results of the Cleanup
The Scouts’ dedication yielded impressive results:
- 460 Trash Bags Collected
- 500 Bottles Recovered
- 850 Cigarette Butts Removed (equivalent to 85 kilograms of toxic waste)

Raising Awareness and Fostering Sustainability
Beyond cleanups, the Scouts engaged with the local community, inspiring eco-friendly habits and environmental awareness through creative and impactful projects:
- A Mural on Lionfish Awareness: Collaborating with local children to create art highlighting the threat of invasive lionfish.
- Reusable Tote Bags: Promoting alternatives to single-use plastics.
- Plastic Use Awareness: Educating the community about the island’s water kiosk and reducing plastic waste.
- Turtle Egg Protection: Organizing beach activities to safeguard the nests of this vulnerable species.

ommunity Engagement and Partnerships
The Scouts also participated in initiatives organized by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, focusing on safe swimming practices. They further immersed themselves in local culture and sustainability by:
- Visiting the historic town of Monemvasia.
- Assisting in preparations for the annual Panigiri festival
- Demonstrating eco-friendly practices by sourcing food locally from the butcher and fruit-and-vegetable market.

A Summer of Impact
Elafonisos Eco is immensely grateful to the Scouts for their hard work, commitment, and eco conscious spirit. Their contributions this summer reflect the essence of our mission: to protect and preserve Elafonisos for generations to come.
