Today, the volunteers of Elafonisos Eco had the incredible opportunity to meet the crew of the scientific sailing boat Progetto Mediterranea, currently docked on their island. It was an inspiring and enriching moment for the team.
The Progetto Mediterranea project combines sailing, scientific research, and environmental commitment. For several years, the crew has been sailing across the Mediterranean Sea to collect valuable data on the state of marine ecosystems. These data are then sent to various research institutes to support scientific understanding and contribute to ocean conservation.
During their discussion, the crew explained how they operate onboard: waste is sorted using different bins, solar panels provide renewable energy, and they do their best to minimize their environmental impact. It’s a great example of how sailing can be done in harmony with nature.
They also discussed the issue of the lionfish, an invasive species spreading throughout the Mediterranean. The crew of Progetto Mediterranea regularly catches lionfish during their journey, and they were glad to learn more about it thanks to the experience and ongoing efforts of Elafonisos Eco.
This meeting gave the volunteers even more motivation to continue their local actions, while reminding them that they are part of a larger network of people dedicated to protecting our blue planet. A heartfelt thank you to the Progetto Mediterranea crew for their warm welcome and inspiring exchange!
