A remarkable initiative in August 2023, as the “Safe Elafonisos” project effectively instilled water safety skills among children. This significant effort was made possible through the collaboration with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation bringing their expertise, resources, and passion to create a transformative educational experience.

Educating for Safety
Our beloved island set the stage for an innovative endeavor aimed at equipping children with essential water safety knowledge. The project was divided into two stages, each designed to provide comprehensive learning opportunities. In the first stage, island children and a team of scouts underwent both theoretical and practical education. The second stage expanded the impact, offering online and onsite education led by primary school teachers and instructors from the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association (GLSA).

Program Highlights
The curriculum of the “Safe Elafonisos” project was thoughtfully crafted to cover a wide spectrum of water safety aspects. From water survival techniques and rescues to cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and actions for choking, the syllabus was comprehensive and engaging. The project incorporated internationally recognized water safety programs like “Charlie the Savior” and “Safe Swim for Aquatic Injury Prevention,” which are already approved and taught in Greek primary schools. Spectators, including adults, parents, and tourists, were captivated by the lessons and their relevance.

Unified Efforts
The collaborative spirit behind the project was epitomized by the four organizations that came together to make it a reality. The Municipality of Elafonisos provided the essential facilities and participants, driven by the unwavering dedication of Mayor Mrs. Efi Liarou. The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation contributed vital resources, reflecting HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco’s commitment to reducing drowning incidents among children globally. The Greek Lifesaving Sports Association (GLSA), under the leadership of President Dr. Stathis Avramidis and Physical Education Teacher Helena Kirikou, played a pivotal role in delivering the training. Lastly, the visionary entrepreneur Enrico Toja’s Elafonisos Eco extended support by offering facilities, aligning with the organization’s commitment to ecological advancements on the island.

Voices of Impact
Leaders from the participating organizations expressed their appreciation for the project’s success. Dr. Avramidis emphasized the significance of water safety awareness, especially in remote areas like Elafonisos, and praised the collaborative efforts that bore fruit. The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation highlighted its dedication to saving lives and supporting educational initiatives like this one. Mayor Efi Liarou underlined the initiative’s impact on enhancing water safety awareness and expressed gratitude to all contributors.
Enrico Toja, the visionary behind Elafonisos Eco, lauded the profound impact of the educational experience, considering it a harmonious addition to the island’s ecological efforts. Participants were awarded elegant commemorative Certificates of Attendance, marking the achievement of the first stage of the project.

Looking Forward
The project’s timetable offered an exciting array of educational activities. From water safety rules to life-saving techniques inspired by real-life stories, the curriculum was both informative and inspiring. The project’s success has set the stage for its continuation, with plans to teach water safety to more children in the coming months.
Conclusion
The “Safe Elafonisos” project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and dedication in promoting water safety among children. By uniting the efforts of organizations, educators, and community members, Elafonisos has taken a significant step toward preventing drowning incidents and instilling valuable life skills. This initiative not only safeguards young lives but also contributes to the island’s overall well-being and progress.
