Elafonisos Eco at the World Ocean Summit in Cascais
We’re proud to share that Elafonisos Eco participated in the 13th Annual World Ocean Summit, held in Cascais, Portugal. This important global event was organized by The Economist Impact, bringing together world leaders, scientists, businesses, and communities to find real solutions for protecting the ocean.

Representing Elafonisos Eco were our President, Enrico Toja, and Green Marketing Manager, Katerina Kokkinaki. Katerina was invited as a speaker in the panel:
“Strengthening Local Economies and Marine Ecosystems Against Climate Risk.”

In her talk, Katerina highlighted how small island communities like Elafonisos are directly impacted by climate change. She shared how local traditions, community knowledge, and sustainable tourism can all work together to protect marine life and support local jobs. She also spoke about the need for local voices to be part of decision making in ocean conservation.

This panel featured inspiring projects from around the world, including:
-
Seaweed farming that protects nature and creates jobs
-
Fishing communities leading conservation efforts
-
Turning invasive lionfish into an economic opportunity
-
Connecting conservation with local identity and culture
The summit also focused on building a sustainable blue economy, reducing marine pollution, and protecting the Mediterranean Sea, which is central to our mission at Elafonisos Eco.

Being part of this global conversation reinforces our belief that local actions matter and that collaboration is key to a better future for our oceans.

A special thank you to The Economist Impact and all the participants who made this event such a powerful step forward for ocean health.

Together, we can make a difference for our oceans! starting here in Elafonisos.
