Today, on Earth Day, we reflect on our mission to protect the unique nature, environment, and archaeological sites of Elafonisos Island. As a non-profit association of social utility, Elafonisos Eco was founded in 2013 by Enrico Toja and a group of friends who shared a deep love for this beautiful island. Our motto, “Living Green,” reflects our values of transformation, carefulness, kindness, and consciousness.
We believe that we have a responsibility to preserve the natural wonders that make Elafonisos so special, while also satisfying the needs of our visitors, the local community, and our tourism infrastructure. That’s why our objective is to become the most sustainable touristic destination in the Mediterranean Sea, extending the average visitor’s stay and de-seasonalizing visits.
To celebrate Earth Day this year, we were fortunate to get the help of 20 volunteers from IAE Lille University School of Management. Over the last two weeks, these dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to clean up the beaches, village, and natural areas of our island. Their hard work paid off, as they were able to collect a staggering amount of 116 big bags of garbage!
Not only did these volunteers help to clean up the island, but they also helped to promote sustainable practices by using the new recycling bins that we’ve recently installed. These bins make it easy to separate plastic, aluminum, cardboard, and glass, ensuring that these materials can be properly recycled.

We’re incredibly grateful for the hard work and dedication of these young people, and we’re proud to have them as part of our Elafonisos Eco community. Their efforts are a shining example of what can be accomplished when we all come together to protect and preserve our planet.
We hope that their work will inspire others to take action and join us in our mission to create a more sustainable and environmental-friendly world.
