On the third day of Elafonisos Eco Week, a brief message was added that linked back to the Waste Management theme introduced on the first day. Vanya Veras, Executive Director of Municipal Waste Europe, shared insights that reinforced the importance of effective waste practices for the island and beyond.
She introduced innovative practices from Belgium and across Europe. Originally from Monemvasia and currently based in Brussels, she explained that her organization represents public waste management companies and municipalities across Europe, with 14 full members and Cyprus as an associate member. She highlighted ongoing efforts to support EU waste legislation and implementation, including key files such as the revised Waste Framework Directive and new rules on eco-design. Recent regulations require municipalities to separately collect textiles (as of January 2025) and bio-waste (as of January 2024). However, she acknowledged that many member states are still lagging behind in enforcement.
Vanya Veras emphasized the importance of circular economy strategies, linking effective waste management to competitiveness, funding opportunities and sustainable development across the EU. Her message was clear : local implementation is crucial, and sharing best practices can accelerate progress. She concluded by offering her support to Greece and Elafonisos in adopting and adapting these EU-aligned practices, reinforcing the event’s message of collaborative innovation for a sustainable future.
