On the third and final day of Elafonisos Eco Week, we focused on sustainable tourism, reinforcing our commitment to making Elafonisos a model for responsible travel and ecological resilience.
Mario Dogliani, President of SDG4MED, shared an inspiring best practice in sustainable tourism from Swan & Lennox, a cruise expedition operator. He began by underlining the importance of preserving pristine destinations like Elafonisos, the Arctic, and Antarctica and how Swan & Lennox aims to leave these places untouched, or even improved, after visits.
He emphasized the operator’s commitment to exceeding environmental regulations, adhering not only to legal standards but also to multiple voluntary environmental protocols from global cruise associations. Their ships are designed for minimal environmental impact, incorporating advanced technologies such as silent navigation via battery packs and cleaner propulsion systems.
Mario Dogliani also highlighted the role of onboard expedition teams, experts who educate passengers on responsible tourism and described impactful initiatives like beach plastic collection in remote areas such as Svalbard, where up to four tons of plastic are collected annually.
Another important point was the integration of scientific research into cruises. Swan & Lennox vessels act as platforms for scientific work, including collaborations with NASA and the Mission Ocean project. Their ships have even contributed water samples from Antarctica to global databases like EMODnet.
