On the third and final day of Elafonisos Eco Week, we focused on sustainable tourism, reinforcing our commitment to making Elafonisos a model for responsible travel and ecological resilience.

Aggelos Tsirigotakis, Mayor of Elafonisos, opened the final day of Elafonisos Eco Week by inviting attendees to explore how tourism can evolve in harmony with sustainability, nature protection, and community engagement. He highlighted the island’s stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. However, the mayor pointed out the challenges of the island’s seasonal tourism model, which sees over 5,000 tourists per day during the summer but only around 300 residents in the winter. This imbalance strains local infrastructure, waste management and the quality of life for residents.

Aggelos Tsirigotakis emphasized that this seasonal model is unsustainable and expressed a vision to shift toward environmentally responsible tourism. The goal is to attract not only seasonal tourists but also eco-travelers who come to learn, contribute and protect the island’s natural treasures.

The path forward is eco-tourism, a model that respects culture, nature, and local communities. Aggelos Tsirigotakis stressed the importance of educating the local population, especially youth and professionals, about the long-term benefits of sustainable tourism, helping create a community that actively participates in shaping Elafonisos’s green identity.

To support this, Elafonisos has introduced several eco-touristic activities, including environmental paths, bird-watching, marine tours, cycling routes, and diving parks. The submerged city of Pavlopetri also offers unique archaeological tourism opportunities. These activities not only enhance the visitor experience but also extend the tourist season, providing new income streams for local businesses, helping them remain open year-round and boosting the local economy.

Finally, he expressed gratitude to Elafonisos Eco for their vital contribution to reshaping tourism on the island. In conclusion, he stressed the importance of adapting to the future with a balanced approach, and how eco-tourism offers a real opportunity to protect the island while welcoming visitors. He invited all stakeholders to join in creating a new identity for Elafonisos, one where tourism helps preserve and showcase the island’s natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.
