On the third and final day of Elafonisos Eco Week, we focused on sustainable tourism, reinforcing our commitment to making Elafonisos a model for responsible travel and ecological resilience.
Iyad Kayali, Regional Director of Green Destinations, delivered two key interventions that outlined a clear and ambitious vision for the future of sustainable tourism on the island.
In his first address, he introduced Green Destinations, an internationally recognized organization that certifies destinations, businesses, and tourism experiences based on sustainability criteria. He emphasized the crucial role of tourism as both an economic driver and a potential solution to environmental challenges, when aligned with responsible practices. Drawing from recent discussions throughout the week, he highlighted pressing topics such as waste management, invasive species like the lionfish, and the importance of community involvement in Elafonisos’ environmental journey.
Later in the day, he returned to expand on practical strategies and tools available for destinations aiming to become truly sustainable. He underlined the growing importance of verified sustainability, particularly in light of the upcoming EU Green Claims Directive, which will require official certification for any green marketing claims.
Through its global network of over 500 destinations, Green Destinations supports communities via assessments, action plans, certifications, and training programs. As one of only three bodies worldwide accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to certify both destinations and tourism businesses, the organization offers a structured path toward sustainability, with progressive levels (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) based on measurable data and KPIs.
A highlight of his second intervention was the announcement that the Peloponnese has become Greece’s sole member in the newly formed Good Travel Alliance, a global network of 20 destinations committed to creating and certifying eco-friendly travel experiences. This milestone opens new doors for Elafonisos to emerge as a leader in sustainable tourism, not only in Greece but on the international stage.
Iyad Kayali concluded by stressing that sustainability is not a destination, but an ongoing journey, one that Elafonisos is well-positioned to embark on with determination, collaboration, and the right tools.
