For this 8th edition of the Elafonisos Eco Week, our association had the honour to welcome HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco to cope with environmental matters and the protection of the ocean. On the second day, after a visit to the port to meet the locals and the fishermen, he took part in the discussions for Blue Opportunities and for the Lionfish and delivered a compelling welcoming speech.
HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco highlighted the island’s growing role as a model for sustainable development and for the conservation of its natural and cultural heritage. For a few years now, Elafonisos, Greece and Monaco have collaborated to look for a healthier and sustainable future, which has already led to tangible progress, especially in sanitation and waste management.
A key focus was dedicated to the threat posed by the Lionfish, an invasive species spreading across the Mediterranean. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco credited the scientific community for their fruitful work and for their efficiency in guiding effective solutions – including population control and culinary innovation. He quoted as an example Andreas Karapanos, Chef at the Louis XV restaurant in Monaco for his creative work and ideas to deal with the Lionfish.
As part of the Foundation of Prince Albert II that is a real support for environmental organisations or projects, he drafted a plan built on three pillars to face ecological threats :
– Scientific Innovation and the search for sustainable solutions
– Engagement of economic stakeholders and institutional support
– Public awareness to involve citizens
As a consequence, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco stressed the importance of science and the role of scientists in the search for sustainable solutions for the preservation of the environment, the ocean and all ecosystems. At a time when science is undermined or challenged in some parts of the world, it is essential to acknowledge their work.
With just five years remaining to meet the global target of protecting 30% of Marine Protected Areas by 2030, the need for immediate action and for further international cooperation was made clear. To support this ambition, Monaco will host the Blue Economy and Finance Forum on June 7-8 2025, ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice. This forum will unite scientists, public authorities, NGOs and the private sector to develop actionable solutions for the preservation of the ocean.
In this context, Elafonisos was held up as a “living lab” for tackling invasive species and environmental threats and as a powerful example of how local initiatives can drive global change.
