09. EEW 2025: Island Solutions by Enrico Toja

by | Jun 25, 2025

During his intervention at Elafonisos Eco Week 2025, Enrico Toja emphasized the inseparable link between waste management and water security. He pointed out that while much of the morning’s discussion had focused on waste, no sustainable waste solution can exist without also addressing water a fundamental and urgent need across the EU.

He stressed the importance of both short- and long-term strategies, highlighting that effective water infrastructure cannot be implemented overnight. Realistically, he noted, any significant project will require at least two to three years to be realized.

In the meantime, Enrico called for practical interim solutions, particularly to address the environmental impact of the more than one million plastic water bottles currently brought to the island each year. He expressed confidence in Petros’ ability to help identify a feasible path forward and invited him to share his insights.
